I can hardly believe my time at Lee Media Group has ended. A few short months ago, I wandered into the office for the first time, hoping that if I waved my resume around and asked enough times, someone would hire me. I’m so grateful you took a chance and offered me a position as a summer intern.
As a computer science major at Texas Christian University, I assumed my job at a web development company would consist of long hours spent in a dark office, staring at pages upon pages of code. I never imagined I’d get to try my hand at marketing, and I certainly didn’t realize how much I would enjoy it. (The dark office bit was true, though. Thanks, Erin, for letting me borrow a corner!)
LMG opened my eyes to a whole new side of the web development industry. I got to dabble in a little bit of everything, from organizing a chamber workshop to kick-starting my voice acting career with Facebook training videos. The huge variety of people I met and worked with was mind-blowing. I loved getting to know members of the Rose Hill community. The local businesses here are all amazing! I would have loved to spend more time helping the city and chamber. I definitely learned a lot about communicating with others on both a professional and personal level.
As someone who prides herself as being both logical and creative, getting to work in the web development industry was a perfect fit. Although I spent most of my time on the more “technical” side of the office, I got to do a lot of writing, social media, marketing, and even a hint of design. One of my favorite summer projects was the training videos, where I was able to compose a script, talk a lot, and edit videos. Not only did I enjoy every aspect of the process, but I got to help local businesses in the process. Thank you to everyone who has watched or shared one of my videos! And thank you, LMG, for letting me use a fantastic microphone set. I felt like a real YouTube star!
But, beyond all the scripts and chamber meetings, what really made this summer memorable was the people I got to work alongside. The office environment at Lee Media Group is so friendly and inviting. Whether you work in the programming hall or the “party” hall, we are all one team. I could never have succeeded without all the support and help you gave me. I was never afraid to ask questions, and I never felt like I had to solve a problem alone. You gave me the freedom to be creative while still stepping in whenever I needed help. I could be myself at work; I wasn’t just a number here.
So thank you, Lee Media Group, for hiring the quiet college freshman who kept sending you emails. You have given me valuable experience that I could never have received working fast food or retail. Thank you for showing me marketing talent I never knew I had, and thank you for letting me be a part of your team this summer. I hope I was able to give back as much as I received!
Sincerely,
Katie, a summer intern.
