AHSGR

International Historical Network

The American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) is an international, non-profit educational organization focused on researching, preserving, and sharing the history of cultural heritage and genealogical legacy of German settlers in the Russian Empire. It was founded in 1968 and is currently the largest repository of information about Germans from Russia in the Western Hemisphere.

With a plethora of historical information and over 2,000 active members, AHSGR came to us in need of a major website overhaul. They needed a new website that would not only be easier for users to navigate information and resources, but also for staff to update content, records, and artifacts. We worked closely with the AHSGR team to reorganize the website information and to help streamline member processes.

website design and rebranding

Old Website for AHSGR Current website for AHSGR

The first step for this project was to create a new logo that was more modern and easier to read. We worked through a process until the new logo perfectly depicted AHSGR’s mission. Once we had the new logo and colors approved, we put together a new website design that is easier for users to navigate. Using the approved design, we developed a fully custom WordPress website that features:

 • A responsive design that is easy to browse on all devices
 • Streamlined member signup and checkout process
 • Integrated functionality so members can easily access protected resources and information
 • E-commerce functionality that integrates with memberships and donations
 • Custom programming for interactive database of German Russian villages
 • A searchable database of publications that goes back to 1969 for members

interactive village database

interactive village database

One feature AHSGR wanted to include on their new website was a database of German Russian Villages that would be easy for members to search. The database which contains over 6,000 villages was built using data collected and maintained by GRSL. We developed a process for importing data as it is updated, and integrated the database into the backend of WordPress so AHSGR staff can add their own details and information about each village.

Because the database is so large, we included several options for searching – by region, province, colony group, village coordinator, village name, or keyword. As feedback and more information is collected, additional features can be added to this area over time.

We worked on the AHSGR website over the course of a year to ensure all facets of our custom web development worked seamlessly. Visitors to the website can now easily sign up as members, research historical or cultural information, search villages, peruse the AHSGR museum, or purchase items from the online store. Visit the AHSGR website to find more on German Russian history and culture!
