This one is for all the ladies out there. The lack of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields is a well known fact. Even the president weighed in on the issue,
“One of the things that I really strongly believe in is that we need to have more girls interested in math, science, and engineering. We’ve got half the population that is way underrepresented in those fields and that means that we’ve got a whole bunch of talent…not being encouraged the way they need to.” -President Barack Obama, February 2013
Recently, Wichita Area Technical College held Girl’s Tech Camp. A two-day hands on event with the goal of showing young girls the joy and possibility of STEM careers. Some of the fields represented at the event included: Robotics, Medical, Design, Composites, and more.
The program gave girls the opportunity to really experience what it’s like to work in these fields. By talking to STEM presenters, the girls gained knowledge and hopefully, inspired them to seek out more information. Girl’s Tech Camp programs and others like it, are important because they show how women are excelling in these careers, and some day they can too.
