Five Tips for a Flawless Photo-shoot

At some point in our lives we all need to have our portrait taken. While few individuals cheer at the mention of a photo opportunity, a majority of us cringe at the thought of being the center of attention. If you are apprehensive about being in the spotlight, relax. There are ways to ensure that you look your very best for your next close-up.

1. Choose the Right Clothing
Clothing can make or break a photograph. You should opt for solid color tops that compliment your skin tone or eye color. Various shades of green, blue, and purple work very well. Also, attempt to avoid patterns and bold prints as they often take away from your face, which is the most important subject. When selecting pants, choose dark colored washes such as rich blue, black, or brown. Dark pants are slimming, sleek, and offer a polished look. Just remember that it is very important to take time to plan your outfit. Ensure that your pieces are clean, lint-free, and ironed.

2. Women, Do Wear Makeup
Even if you do not wear makeup, it is still a good idea to apply foundation for a photo session. This will help even out your skin tone and improve your appearance. If you wear makeup on a regular basis, apply what you would for a nice evening out. You want to look polished, but not overdone. Also, avoid makeup that is glossy or shimmery. These tones are distracting and do not photograph well. Instead, choose mattes and soft creams to reduce shine or the appearance of oil.

3. Have A Good Hair Day
Portrait day is not the day to roll out of bed and go. Ladies, take the time to style your hair in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. You should aim for a hairstyle that is classic and timeless. Gents, pay your barber a special visit a week before your session to ensure that you look your very best.

4. Don’t Overdo the Jewelry and Accessories
Jewelry serves as a great accessory to any outfit. However, it should not distract from your face. The main rule is to keep it simple. Avoid trendy pieces such as bold statement necklaces or bulky scarves. Accessories such as dainty earrings and short chain necklaces work well for females. Men should choose standard cuff links and their favorite watch.

5. Relax
One of the major causes of a bad photograph is a stiff appearance. This is usually caused by anxiety and nerves. It is no surprise that people look best in portraits when they are comfortable and in their element. Focus on taking deep breaths, check your posture, and smile naturally.

Having your portrait taken does not have to be a horrific experience. Even if you are not comfortable in front of the camera, you can better prepare yourself to make the experience more enjoyable. By following these steps, you’ll be sure to blow your photographer away.
